The Importance of Portable Gas Detectors

The Importance of Portable Gas Detectors

Posted by Claire Allcock on 4th May 2020

Portable and fixed gas detectors are best known for working together to create a comprehensive gas safety system. But why do we need portable gas detectors in an environment that’s covered with fixed gas detectors?

They Detect Gases in the User’s Breathing Zone

Being a handheld Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) device, a portable detector senses gas hazards that are present in the breathing zone (around 25cm away from the user’s mouth). This gives a more accurate reading for the area that personnel are working in, compared to fixed gas detectors which may be positioned too far away to detect the hazard around the workforce.

They’re Effective in Confined Spaces

Because of their size and effectiveness in close proximity to the user, portable gas detectors are great for detecting any hazards present in confined spaces. These environments are notoriously dangerous, meaning the need for effective gas detection is even more important.

They’re Usually Battery Powered

Although failsafe measures are usually in place to prevent loss of power from affecting gas safety, for smaller premises, disruptions to mains power could affect fixed gas detection systems. As portable gas detectors are usually battery operated, they are not affected by main power outages and can continue to protect your workforce.

They Detect Migrating Gas Hazards

While fixed gas detectors are extremely effective in sensing hazards at a leak source, or an area where gas may accumulate (such as heavier-than-air gas), in some processes or industries, gas may migrate away from fixed sensors. By equipping personnel with portable detection devices, they can be protected from hazards no matter where the gas migrates to.

While it’s true that portable gas detectors are beneficial for workplace safety, it cannot be underestimated how effective an integrated portable and fixed solution is to create a comprehensive gas safety protocol.
